New lawmakers sworn in to serve HK

HONG KONG - Members of the eighth-term Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region were sworn in during an oath-taking ceremony on Thursday morning, officially starting the four-year term of the new legislature.

Article 104 of the Basic Law stipulated that, when assuming office, the LegCo members must, in accordance with the law, swear to uphold the Basic Law and swear allegiance to the HKSAR. 

The ceremony was administered by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu at the Chamber of the Legislative Council Complex.

After the LegCo general election on Dec 7, 90 lawmakers were voted into office, with 40 elected by the Election Committee constituency, 30 by functional constituencies and 20 by geographical constituencies.
