Hong Kong experienced the coldest day so far this autumn on Wednesday, as the minimum temperature recorded at the city’s observatory fell to 18.4 degrees Celsius.

“Up to 8:40 am, the minimum temperature recorded at the observatory was 18.4 C, the lowest so far this autumn,” said the Hong Kong Observatory.

As of 9:10 am, the temperature across the city was generally below 18 degrees. Tai Mo Shan logged the lowest temperature at 10.5 degrees, followed by 13.3 degrees in Ngong Ping and 15.7 degrees at the Peak.

Under the influence of an intense northeast monsoon, the local weather was slightly cooler in the morning and the monsoon will continue to affect the coast of southern China on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing persistent wind and cooler weather, according to the HKO.

The outer rainbands of Severe Tropical Storm Fengshen was also bringing a few rain patches to the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea, it said.

The weather will become brighter in the latter part of this week and daytime temperatures will also rise gradually, as Fengshen was departing and the monsoon moderating slightly.

Meanwhile, under the combined effect of spring tide and the northeast monsoon, water levels over local coastal areas will be generally 0.5 to 1 meter higher than normal on Wednesday and Thursday, said the weather forecaster.

“Flooding may occur over some low-lying coastal areas during the high tides at night. The water level over Victoria Harbour will rise to around 3 meters above Chart Datum,” the observatory added.
