SCO: Partnerships for peace, progress and stability stressed

Editor's note: Chinese President Xi Jinping held a series of bilateral meetings on Saturday ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit 2025 in Tianjin. The following are the highlights of the talks.

TIANJIN - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday met with the leaders of Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Cambodia, and Nepal in the port city of Tianjin.

Myanmar's Acting President Min Aung Hlaing, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Prime Minister of Egypt Mostafa Madbouly, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli are in China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, as well as activities to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Xi meets Myanmar's acting president

During the meeting, President Xi called for China and Myanmar to deepen strategic communication and step up efforts to build a community with a shared future.

Xi highlighted Myanmar's role as part of the eastern theater of the World Anti-Fascist War and its status as a key dialogue partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, saying that the pauk-phaw friendship (pauk-phaw means fraternal in the language of Myanmar) between China and Myanmar is deeply rooted in the people of both countries and remains ever-fresh over time.

Emphasizing the importance of advancing key projects within the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, Xi called for joint efforts to combat cross-border crimes and maintain peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border. It is important to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals, institutions and projects in Myanmar, he said.

Min Aung Hlaing said that China is Myanmar's good neighbor, which has long supported the country's economic and social development, assisted in its post-disaster recovery and plays a constructive role in maintaining stability in northern Myanmar.

Xi meets Kazakh President

The Chinese leader held a welcome ceremony for Kazakh President Tokayev, and held talks with him.

Xi said that regardless of changes in the international landscape, China and Kazakhstan should remain committed to good-neighborliness, open cooperation for win-win results and joint construction of a community with a shared future, and support each other on their own core interests and major concerns.

Noting that China and Kazakhstan are strategic partners who can trust and rely on each other, Xi called on both countries to consolidate and expand all-around cooperation to elevate bilateral ties to new heights.

He also called for joint efforts to deepen multilateral coordination, strengthen the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and uphold the international system with the United Nations at the core for a fairer and more equitable international order.

Highlighting the unprecedented level of Kazakhstan-China relations, Tokayev noted the record-high trade volume between the two countries last year and the smooth progress of major cooperation projects.

He expressed Kazakhstan's willingness to continue deepening practical cooperation with China, enhance exchanges and elevate bilateral relations to a higher level.

Xi meets Egyptian prime minister

President Xi called on China and Egypt to promote greater development of bilateral ties and make more contributions to global peace, stability and prosperity, when meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Madbouly.

Noting that Egypt was the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, Xi said the China-Egypt relationship is currently at its best in history.

As the two countries will celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, Xi said both sides should seize this opportunity to advance bilateral ties toward building a China-Egypt community with a shared future in the new era, and inject new momentum into China's relations with Arab and African countries. Xi also highlighted the need for China and Egypt to be close friends in multilateral collaboration, upholding responsibilities of both as major countries of the Global South.

Madbouly said that Egypt values its relationship with China, firmly adheres to the one-China principle, and is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges and expand trade and investment. He also expressed Egypt's commitment to strengthening coordination and cooperation with China in international and regional affairs.

Xi meets Cambodian prime minister

When meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Xi called on China and Cambodia to follow the path of friendship, stand in close unity, and expand cooperation in order to enhance the well-being of the two peoples.

China supports Cambodia in safeguarding stability, upholding independence and achieving development and revitalization, Xi said.

The two sides should take resolute measures to crack down on cross-border crimes such as online gambling and telecom fraud, and safeguard people's safety and property, he stressed.

Calling the Southeast Asian country an ironclad friend, Xi said that the two sides should firmly follow the path of friendship charted by the older generation of leaders of both countries and contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Hun Manet said that no matter how the international situation changes, Cambodia is committed to friendly policies toward China, upholds the one-China principle and supports the three major global initiatives proposed by China. Cambodia looks forward to working together with China to support each other on issues concerning their core interests and major concerns, he said.

Xi meets Nepali prime minister

President Xi and Nepali Prime Minister Oli jointly announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.

Xi said China is ready to work with Nepal to continue the traditional friendship, and promote greater development of the strategic partnership of cooperation featuring everlasting friendship for development and prosperity between the two sides.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal. Xi said that over the past seven decades, the two peoples have stood together through thick and thin, writing a history of good-neighborliness and friendship.

He called on the two sides to strengthen strategic mutual trust, firmly support each other on issues related to core interests and major concerns, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly advance the Belt and Road cooperation.

Oli said that Nepal-China relations have withstood numerous challenges and have only grown stronger over time. Cooperation with China has significantly contributed to the country's economic and social development, he said.

He also expressed Nepal's commitment to jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, strengthening cooperation with China across various sectors for more positive outcomes.
