Xi, leaders engage in high-level talks

Editor's note: Chinese President Xi Jinping held a series of bilateral meetings on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit 2025 in Tianjin. The following are highlights of the talks.

Joint BRI effort with Maldives highlighted

President Xi Jinping said on Sunday that the China-Maldives comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples, and he called on the two countries to further deepen practical cooperation.

Xi made the remarks when meeting with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in Tianjin. He said that China will continue to support the Maldives in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

He also expressed China's readiness to strengthen exchanges with the Maldives at various levels, including between political parties, legislative bodies and governments, and to enhance mutual understanding and mutual trust and foster closer people-to-people bonds.

Noting that the two countries have achieved positive progress in advancing Belt and Road cooperation, Xi said that China will continue to deepen practical cooperation with the Maldives to ensure the effective implementation of the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement, and to carry out cooperation in various areas such as fisheries, marine scientific research, environmental protection, and disaster prevention and reduction.

The two countries should strengthen communication and coordination, safeguard common strategic interests and uphold international fairness and justice, in order to jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity, Xi said.

Muizzu said that China, with its profound culture and commitment to building a community with a shared future for humanity, has been a stabilizing force in a turbulent world.

The close Maldives-China relationship has set an example of equal cooperation between nations of different sizes, he said, adding that his country appreciates China's long-standing support in advancing its economic development and improving people's livelihoods.

Azerbaijan gets support for joining SCO

President Xi said on Sunday that China supports Azerbaijan in joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and stands ready to enhance multilateral coordination with the country to safeguard the common interests of the Global South and jointly advance the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

Xi made the remarks during his meeting with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev in Tianjin.

Azerbaijan is currently a dialogue partner of the SCO.

Xi said that China and Azerbaijan are good friends and good partners. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 33 years ago, the traditional friendship between the two countries has continuously deepened, political mutual trust has strengthened and mutually beneficial cooperation has yielded fruitful results, he said.

The establishment of the China-Azerbaijan comprehensive strategic partnership in April ushered in a new chapter of all-around cooperation between the two nations, he noted.

Xi emphasized that China and Azerbaijan should maintain strategic communication and firmly support each other.

The two countries should foster greater synergy between their development strategies and advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, he said, adding that efforts should be made to promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and continuously improve the efficiency of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.

Aliyev said the comprehensive strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and China reflects the high level of bilateral ties. He noted that the two countries have maintained close high-level exchanges and have consistently supported each other on issues concerning their core interests and major concerns.

Beijing, Minsk sign documents in multiple areas

President Xi has called on China and Belarus to advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and strengthen the alignment of their development strategies to continue to create new highlights and growth in bilateral cooperation.

Xi made the remarks on Sunday when meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Tianjin. The two countries signed multiple bilateral cooperation documents in areas such as science and technology, finance, transportation, and customs inspection and quarantine.

The all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Belarus is developing at a high level, Xi said, adding that both sides should continue to firmly support each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns.

As the years 2024 and 2025 were designated as the China-Belarus years of science and technology innovation, Xi said the two nations should make full use of the outcomes to accelerate the development of new quality productive forces and contribute to the growth and revitalization of both countries.

The two sides should also strengthen coordination within multilateral frameworks and push for the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, he added. Xi noted that the people of China and Belarus had fought side by side, making significant contributions to crush militarism and fascism, and in the process forged a deep friendship.

China would like to work with Belarus to practice true multilateralism and make joint efforts to promote world peace, development, cooperation and win-win results, Xi said.

Lukashenko emphasized that as China's all-weather partner and reliable friend, Belarus is ready to strengthen exchanges with China on governance experience, deepen practical cooperation across various fields, and further promote bilateral relations.

Sino-Kyrgyz cooperation to expand

President Xi has called on China and Kyrgyzstan to break new ground while upholding fundamental principles to push for the in-depth development of practical cooperation.

He made the remarks on Sunday when meeting with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov in Tianjin.

Following their talks, the two sides signed bilateral cooperation documents covering areas such as connectivity, human resources and civil aviation.

Xi said that China stands ready to continue to firmly support Kyrgyzstan, strengthen the alignment of their development strategies, and work hand in hand on their respective paths toward modernization and national rejuvenation, in order to build a closer China-Kyrgyzstan community with a shared future.

Xi called for joint efforts to promote bilateral trade and investment, deepen connectivity, enhance development driven by science and technology, and expand collaboration in emerging sectors such as clean energy, green minerals and artificial intelligence.

He also underscored the importance of boosting exchanges in culture, tourism, education and healthcare to bring the people of the two countries closer.

China will fully support Kyrgyzstan as it takes over the rotating presidency of the SCO, Xi said, expressing Beijing's willingness to back Bishkek in playing a bigger role in regional and international affairs.

China will strengthen multilateral coordination with Kyrgyzstan to jointly safeguard the United Nations-centered international system and contribute to world peace and development, he added.

Japarov said that Kyrgyzstan is eager to learn from China's experience and deepen cooperation in connectivity, clean energy, AI and technological innovation.

He reaffirmed his country's firm support for China on issues concerning China's core interests, including the Taiwan question.

Sound Türkiye ties a boon for Global South

President Xi has called for China and Türkiye to remain committed to the trend of the times to promote peace, development, cooperation and win-win results, and support each other on their respective paths toward national prosperity, in order to elevate their strategic cooperative relationship to new heights.

Xi made the remarks on Sunday during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Tianjin.

He said that both China and Türkiye are major emerging countries and significant countries of the Global South, sharing a spirit of independence. The sustained high-level development of China-Türkiye relations aligns with the fundamental interests of both nations and the broader interests of the Global South, he said.

Xi called on both nations to join hands to contribute to the building of a more just and equitable global governance system.

Noting that next year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Türkiye, he underlined the need for the two countries to solidify their political mutual trust, support each other on issues concerning their core interests and major concerns, and strengthen counterterrorism and security cooperation.

Xi said that both countries should deepen practical cooperation, strive to enhance synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and Türkiye's Middle Corridor Initiative, advance the development of the southern corridor of the China-Europe Railway Express, and create new highlights in areas such as new energy, 5G technology and biomedicine.

Erdogan expressed Türkiye's high regard for developing relations with China, saying that his country firmly adheres to the one-China policy.

He praised China's fair stance on the Middle East issue and expressed Türkiye's readiness to work with China to uphold international fairness and justice.

China, Armenia build strategic partnership

President Xi and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced on Sunday the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries as they met in Tianjin.

During the meeting, the two countries also signed multiple bilateral cooperation documents in various fields, including market regulation and media.

Xi said that China supports Armenia in joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and would like to work with the country to practice true multilateralism and jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity.

Armenia is currently a dialogue partner of the SCO.

Xi noted that since the establishment of China-Armenia diplomatic relations 33 years ago, the two countries have respected and trusted each other and benefited and learned from each other, leading to the sustained, sound and steady development of bilateral ties.

Calling the establishment of their strategic partnership an important milestone in the history of China-Armenia relations, Xi said the two countries should firmly support each other and deepen cooperation in various fields to strive for continuous progress in bilateral relations from a new starting point.

While emphasizing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, Xi called on the two countries to strengthen connectivity and promote exchanges in areas such as education, science and technology, culture and tourism.

Pashinyan said that Armenia is willing to learn from China's development experience to boost its own economic and social development.

While reaffirming Armenia's commitment to the one-China principle, Pashinyan said his country expects to expand economic and trade cooperation with China, maintain close coordination in international and regional affairs, and further advance bilateral ties.

Beijing, Hanoi called on to boost exchanges

President Xi has underlined the need for China and Vietnam to firm up their confidence in the socialist path and system and strengthen unity and cooperation, in order to ensure steady progress in the building of a community with a shared future amid a rapidly evolving global landscape marked by turbulence and transformation.

Xi made the remarks on Sunday when meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Tianjin.

Xi recalled his state visit to Vietnam in April and urged relevant government departments and local authorities to step up implementation of the consensus reached by both sides during that trip to make more substantial achievements in the comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two countries.

He expressed China's willingness to deepen exchanges with Vietnam on experiences in state and party governance, and said that both sides should actively promote cooperation in mutual connectivity, the digital economy and artificial intelligence.

Xi called on the two countries to strengthen exchanges of experience in the construction of free trade zones and special economic zones to contribute to each other's modernization efforts. He also called for enhanced multilateral cooperation to safeguard the common interests of the Global South.

Chinh said Vietnam and China enjoy shared strategic interests as both pursue the socialist path, adding that developing relations with China is Vietnam's strategic choice and top priority in its foreign policy.

Chinh said that Vietnam is ready to align its development strategies with China, expand trade and investment cooperation, enhance mutual connectivity and increase cultural and people-to-people exchanges, working together toward modernization.
