HK claims two golds in wushu for record World Games performance

Hong Kong athletes clinched two gold medals in wushu at the World Games in Chengdu on Saturday, bringing the medal count to three and also surpassing the record of one gold at the 2022 edition.

Lydia Sham Hui-yu won a gold medal in the wushu Women's Changquan - Jianshu - Qiangshu Combined event, following another triumph achieved by Anthony Yeung Chung-hei earlier in the day in the wushu Men's Taijijian Combined event.

Sham secured her first World Games gold with 29.260 points, while Malaysia’s Pang Pui-yee won silver, and Japan’s Nanoha Kida earned bronze.

“Lydia Sham performed at the highest level in Changquan, Jianshu, and Qiangshu, demonstrating her ability across all three disciplines. Her skills and resilience were truly impressive, and her victory is well-deserved,” said Wong Po-kee, Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong, China delegation.

This victory not only marked the delegation's third gold medal at the World Games 2025 but also the second gold claimed by the wushu team, Wong added.

In the men’s Taijijian Combined event, Yeung edged out Japan's Tomohiro Araya by 0.05 points to take gold with 19.526 points, while Singapore's Tay Yu Xuan finished third.

Yeung, the bronze medalist at the previous World Games, had once again delivered a strong and determined performance, said Wong, adding that he delivered his moves with a harmonious blend of softness and strength, powered by profound internal energy.

On Friday, Grace Lau Mo-sheung claimed the women's kata gold in karate, delivering the Hong Kong delegation's first gold and only its second in the World Games history - and its first-ever in a women's event.

The World Games 2025, taking place from Aug 7 to 17, features more than 200 medal events across 34 sports disciplines. Hong Kong athletes are competing in seven sports, including air sports, billiards, karate, orienteering, squash, water skiing, and wushu.
