The grand Lunar New Year fireworks display will make its long-awaited return to Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour at 8:00 pm on Feb 11, offering a splendid 23-minute show to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dragon.

This marks the first time the event will be held since its suspension in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 23,888 fireworks will be launched from three barges stationed in the harbor, across from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

Residents will have the opportunity to enjoy the display from various vantage points across the city, including Tsim Sha Tsui, Mid-Levels, Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, and Hung Hom.

Organized by the Hong Kong Celebration Association and coordinated by the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau, the event is expected to cost around HK$13 million ($1.66 million).

Wilson Mao, the head of the production company responsible for staging the fireworks display, said that the show will feature eight acts. 

In the second act, fireworks will form an “8”-shape of gold and red, symbolizing hopes for abundant wealth in the new year.

The sixth act will feature fireworks forming smiling faces and red hearts, aimed at reminding people to slow down and savor life's simple pleasures in the upcoming year.

Mao added that the eighth act will be a grand spectacle, with the night-sky being illuminated by fireworks depicting shoe-shaped gold ingots and golden rain, symbolizing a continuous flow of prosperity and joy in the year ahead.

For the finale, there will be a thrilling 30-second display of fireworks forming the shape of a grand crown, he added.
