Tourists, cruise passengers and office workers on Hong Kong Island’s business district all turned their attention to Victoria Harbour on Friday. Floating on the water off Tamar Park are two 18-meter-tall rubber yellow ducks — a striking addition to Hong Kong’s iconic skyline.

The rubber duck series, created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman in 2007, has made appearances in 50 locations around the world, including Hong Kong in 2013. Now they are back and ready to bring “twice the fun, double the happiness” to the city, Hofman said at the launch ceremony on Friday.

For the next two weeks, the public can enjoy the giant artwork at the Central and Western District Promenade. The floating installation is the centerpiece of the Double Ducks art show series, which includes a themed ferry plying between Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui, free balloon distribution, and outdoor screenings of themed animations.

On June 18, the ducks will parade through the harbor, passing Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui, and stopping at tourist attractions the Avenue of Stars and the K11 Musea shopping center.

Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, president of the city’s Legislative Council, had a close view of the ducks from the LegCo Complex in Tamar Park. He described the pair as “eye-catching and adorable” as if they were greeting everyone in the city.

“The arrival of the rubber ducks is expected to bring positive energy and joy to all of us,” he said on social media on Friday. “Just like the Happy Hong Kong campaign, launched by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, it is hoped that we will all be able to put a smile and inject impetus into our society and economy.”

We invite China Daily’s readers to view the giant rubber ducks through the lens of our photographers and soak up the positive vibe they bring to Hong Kong.
