Cambodia reports zero COVID-19 death since April: PM

SIEM REAP, Cambodia / KUALA LUMPUR / SEOUL / NEW DELHI / SINGAPORE / HANOI / MANILA / YANGON – Cambodia has seen no new deaths from COVID-19 since April, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Friday.

"This is a success that resulted from our joint efforts in the fight against COVID-19," he said in a speech during a visit to thousands of families, who had agreed to move their illegal buildings out of the famed Angkor Archaeological Park.
He said the Southeast Asian nation reported zero COVID-19 cases for the first time on Friday after daily cases had been detected since late June.
"Today, Cambodia found no even a single case of COVID-19," Hun Sen said.
However, Cambodia is not COVID-19-free yet, as it still has 53 active cases, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
Thong Mengdavid, a research fellow at the Phnom Penh-based Asian Vision Institute, attributed the success in the pandemic fight to the kingdom's strong leadership and high vaccination rates.
The kingdom has so far vaccinated at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines to 15.21 million people, or 95 percent of its 16 million population, the MoH said, adding that 14.57 million of the population, or 91 percent, have been fully vaccinated with two required shots.

Also, 10.26 million, or 64 percent, have got a third dose, and 4.47 million, or almost 28 percent, have had a fourth dose, and 1 million, or 6.2 percent have received a fifth dose, the MoH said.
China's Sinovac and Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines have been widely used in the country's immunization program.

India

India's daily COVID-19 caseload on Friday decreased to 2,119, officials said.

According to federal health ministry data released on Friday morning, 2,119 new cases of COVID-19 were reported during the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 44,638,636 in the country.

The country also logged 10 related deaths during the past 24 hours, pushing the overall death toll to 528,953 since the beginning of the pandemic, the ministry said.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 2,561 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Thursday, bringing the national total to 4,875,131, according to the health ministry.

There are eight new imported cases, with 2,553 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Eight new deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 36,437.

Myanmar

Myanmar confirmed 273 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the country's total tally to 629,926, according to the Ministry of Health on Thursday.

The ministry said the death toll from COVID-19 in the country remained unchanged at 19,472 on Thursday with no new deaths reported, the ministry said.

Republic of Korea

South Korea reported 24,751 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Thursday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 25,244,255, the health authorities said Friday.

Among the new cases, 60 were imported from overseas, lifting the total to 69,123.

Thirty more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 28,952.

Singapore reported 8,176 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the country's total tally to 2,046,123.

Of the new cases, 837 were detected through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests and 7,339 through ARTs (antigen rapid test), according to statistics released by the country's Ministry of Health.
Among the PCR cases, 805 were local transmissions and 32 were imported cases. Among the ART cases with mild symptoms and assessed to be of low risk, there were 7,060 local transmissions and 279 imported cases.
Five new deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Thursday, taking the total death toll to 1,659.

The Philippines

The Philippines reported 2,227 new COVID-19 infections on Thursday, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 3,989,556.

The Department of Health said the number of active cases rose to 23,721, while 44 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, pushing the country's death toll to 63,669.

Vietnam

Vietnam recorded 541 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, down by 796 from Wednesday, according to its ministry of health.

All the new cases were locally transmitted, said the health ministry.

The newly reported infections brought the total tally to 11,495,772. The country reported no new deaths from the pandemic on Thursday, with the total fatalities staying at 43,159.
