Vietnam reports 2,161 new COVID-19 cases

HANOI / MANILA / SINGAPORE / KUALA LUMPUR / WELLINGTON / NEW DELHI / SEOUL - Vietnam recorded 2,161 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, up by 770 from Sunday, according to its ministry of health.

Among the new cases, only one was imported and the rest were locally transmitted, said the health ministry.

The newly reported infections brought the total tally to 11,421,055. The country reported two new deaths from the pandemic in the central Thanh Hoa province and the southern Tay Ninh province on Monday, bringing the total fatalities to 43,122.

As of Monday, there were 144 severe cases in need of assisted breathing in the Southeast Asian country, according to the ministry.

Vietnam has already recorded COVID-19 infections with the Omicron BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.12.1 and BA.2.74 sub-variants and is accelerating the inoculation of its people with a fourth vaccine dose.

India

India's daily COVID-19 caseload decreased to 4,417, official data showed on Tuesday.

According to federal health ministry data released on Tuesday morning, 4,417 new cases of COVID-19 were reported during the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 44,466,862.

The cases reported on Tuesday marked a decrease in comparison to 5,910 cases tallied a day earlier.

With the new fresh cases, India's active caseload currently stands at 52,336.

The country also logged 23 related deaths during the past 24 hours, pushing the overall death toll to 528,030 since the beginning of the pandemic, the ministry said.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 1,486 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Monday, bringing the national total to 4,792,942, according to the Health Ministry.

There were two new imported cases, with 1,484 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Another four deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 36,249.

New Zealand

New Zealand recorded 2,035 new community cases of COVID-19 and four more deaths from the pandemic, the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

The country has seen the number of daily cases going down steadily from over 10,000 cases nationwide in early July.

With the fresh cases, New Zealand has reported 1,734,684 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1,933 COVID-19-related deaths since the pandemic hit the country in early 2020, the ministry said.

Philippines

The Philippines reported 2,202 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 3,893,573.

The Department of Health said the number of active cases rose to 24,493, while 51 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, pushing the country's death toll to 62,062.

Metro Manila, the capital region with over 13 million people, tallied 720 new cases.

The Philippines reported its highest COVID-19 single-day tally of 39,004 new cases on Jan. 15. The country, with a population of around 110 million, has fully vaccinated over 72.6 million people.

Singapore

Singapore reported 1,176 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the total tally to 1,847,270.

Of the new cases, 141 cases were detected through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests and 1,035 through ART (antigen rapid test) tests, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health.

Among the PCR cases, 135 were local transmissions and six were imported cases. Among the ART cases with mild symptoms and assessed to be of low risk, there were 968 local transmissions and 67 imported cases.

Two more deaths were reported from COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the total death toll to 1,596, the ministry said.

South Korea

South Korea reported 99,837 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Monday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 23,706,477, the health authorities said Tuesday.

The daily caseload was up from 37,548 the prior day, but it was lower than 115,615 tallied a week ago, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

For the past week, the daily average number of confirmed cases was 80,621.

Forty-four more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 27,193. The total fatality rate was 0.11 percent.
