SANYA - Chinese Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan on Saturday urged swift containment of the latest resurgence of COVID-19 cases in south China's Hainan province.

Sun, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during her inspection in Hainan's coastal resort city of Sanya.

She also called for efforts to accelerate the building of makeshift hospitals, optimize the whole process of nucleic acid testing, and strengthen community-level epidemic prevention and control.

Noting that the service provided to stranded tourists should be guaranteed, Sun ordered the province to carry out proper risk assessment and strictly implement the prevention and control measures to stop the spreading of the epidemic. 

Meanwhile, the Chinese mainland on Saturday reported 623 locally-transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases, of which 494 were in Hainan province, the National Health Commission said Sunday.

Altogether 1,844 local asymptomatic carriers were newly identified on the day, including 846 in Hainan, 443 in Tibet autonomous region and 396 in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, said the commission in its report.

A total of 120 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery on the mainland on Saturday.

Saturday saw no new deaths from COVID-19, with the total death toll at 5,226, according to the commission.
