To mark the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region’s establishment, a high-level legal forum on the Basic Law was held on Friday in Hong Kong.

The all-day event invited over 30 social dignitaries to share their insights on the significant law and the “one country, two systems” principle guaranteed by it.

Below are some key takeaways of their speeches made at the Stability to Prosperity legal conference:

Shen Chunyao

Chairman of the Legislative Affairs Commission and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress

“One country, two systems” is a significant practice for the peaceful reunification of the nation. As the situation changes, it should also be renewed and improved over time. Otherwise, it will lose vitality.

During the implementation of “one country, two systems”, it’s inevitable to encounter some unexpected new situations, risks and challenges. The nation and the HKSAR should actively face up to the difficulties, actively resolve new problems, and further improve the practice.

Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah

Secretary for justice of the Hong Kong SAR

As long as we stay true to our aspiration in implementing “one country, two systems”, and firmly uphold the “one country” principle, the policy will remain the best arrangement for Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity.

The economic system, lifestyle and the common law system enshrined in the Basic Law will also remain unchanged and function well.

Chris Tang Ping-keung

Secretary for security of the Hong Kong SAR

Since Hong Kong's National Security Law took effect, 186 people have been arrested on suspicion of endangering national security, and 115 people and five companies have been charged. In eight completed trials, all 10 defendants were convicted and face up to nine years in prison.
