Nomination period for CE election to start on April 3

HONG KONG - The nomination period for the sixth-term Chief Executive Election will run from April 3 to 16, the Electoral Affairs Commission said on Friday.

Pursuant to the Electoral Procedure (Chief Executive Election) Regulation, a candidate must submit the completed nomination form in person to the Returning Officer at City Gallery of 3 Edinburgh Place in Central district during the nomination period

The once-in-five-year election, which was originally scheduled for March 27, was postponed to May 8 due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

All candidates must submit the completed nomination form in person to the Returning Officer at City Gallery of 3 Edinburgh Place in Central district during the nomination period pursuant to the Electoral Procedure (Chief Executive Election) Regulation, a spokesman for the Electoral Affairs Commission said in a statement. 

Keith Yeung Kar-hung, judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, has been appointed by the Electoral Affairs Commission as the Returning Officer for the election.

To be eligible for nomination as a candidate, one has to be a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region permanent resident and a Chinese citizen, and aged 40 years or above.

He or she should have no right of abode in any foreign country and has ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for a continuous period of not less than 20 years.

A candidate's nomination must be subscribed by not less than 188 members of the Election Committee, with not less than 15 members of the Election Committee in each of the five sectors, the spokesman said.

In deciding whether a candidate is validly nominated, the Candidate Eligibility Review Committee may require the candidate to provide any other information that the committee considers appropriate to be satisfied as to the validity of the nomination, the spokesman added.

The Election Committee shall elect the chief executive designate by secret ballot on a one-person-one-vote basis. The election of the chief executive designate shall require a simple majority vote of all the 1,500 members of the Election Committee.
