Congratulatory remarks from Chief Executive of the HKSAR
By China Daily

Editor’s note: The following is the English translation of the chief executive’s message, delivered in Chinese in a pre-recorded video.

The Campus News Awards, established by China Daily Hong Kong, are celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to China Daily on this important milestone.

In the past two years, the event has faced a lot of challenges because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its organizer has made great efforts to overcome various difficulties so that this year’s event could be held successfully. It provides students a unique platform to communicate and exchange ideas with peers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The organizer’s efforts are worthy of recognition.

News is the first draft of history, and high-quality news reporting can also promote social progress. The importance of journalism is indisputable. I am delighted to learn that this year, as always, the Campus News Awards attracted a large number of universities from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to participate, with over 700 entries received. Many of the award-winning entries were related to COVID-19, offering comprehensive coverage of the impact of COVID-19 on the community. From social issues to interpersonal relationships, to infection control measures and new economic models, the students demonstrated their keen sense of journalism. I also appreciate the reports on traditional handicrafts, environmental protection, climate change and concern for the disadvantaged. The works reflect the students’ global perspective, diverse interests and humanistic concern for society, all of which are important qualities for a journalist.

Hong Kong is at a historic juncture. The practice of “one country, two systems” is back on track in the city, with full support from the central government. We have brought the pandemic under control, reignited the economy, and people have begun to resume normal life. I look forward to the early resumption of normal travel between Hong Kong, the mainland and Macao. I hope that by then, people from all over the country will be able to come to Hong Kong and witness the new changes in Hong Kong. I hope we can celebrate together the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region next year.

I would like to congratulate every winner and wish all of you a bright future. I hope you will become a journalist after graduation, be witnesses to history and promote social progress. Thank you.
