HONG KONG - The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region condemned, strongly disapproved and firmly opposed on Friday the European Parliament resolution on Hong Kong.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the commissioner’s office said the July 8 resolution, which “urged” the European Union to take specific actions and even sanctions against China, smeared the independent performance of duties by HKSAR law enforcement and judicial authorities and slandered the Chinese central government’s policy towards Hong Kong.

The spokesperson for the commissioner's office stressed that for quite some time, some politicians of the European Parliament, out of self-interest, have repeatedly taken confrontational actions on Hong Kong and other issues concerning China’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity

The spokesperson pointed out that, under the National Security Law for the HKSAR, Hong Kong society has returned to stability, the rule of law and justice have been upheld, and the extensive lawful rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents have been better protected in a more stable and secure environment governed by the rule of law.

“Instigated by some anti-China MEPs, however, the European Parliament distorted facts with ulterior motives, trampled on the rule of law and judicial independence of the HKSAR, and tried to whitewash, under the pretext of press freedom, certain media outlet and its executives who are suspected of engaging in criminal acts,” the statement reads.

“It used every means to endorse anti-China, destabilizing forces in Hong Kong, accused China in a condescending manner, and threatened to impose sanctions on China. All this has laid bare the deep-rooted ideological bias of these politicians and their hypocrisy and double standard. But they have overestimated themselves and such attempts are purely badly timed,” it added.

The spokesperson stressed that for quite some time, some politicians of the European Parliament, out of self-interest, have repeatedly taken confrontational actions on Hong Kong and other issues concerning China’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, and meddled with Hong Kong affairs time and again.

The spokesperson said what they have done is political grandstanding and a stumbling block to mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the EU, “arousing strong indignation and resolute opposition of all the Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots.”

“The Chinese people will never accept the lecturing of this group of people, will never allow them to interfere in Hong Kong’s internal affairs, which are China’s internal affairs, and will never sit idly by when anyone attempts to undermine our national sovereignty, security and dignity,” the statement reads.

“We strongly urge some anti-China members of the European Parliament to fully and accurately understand 'one country, two systems', recognize the historical trend, reflect on themselves, and abide by international law and basic norms governing international relations,” it added.

In a separate statement on Thursday, the commissioner's office also condemned the act of a US consular official who openly exerted pressure on judicial proceedings in the HKSAR.

A spokesperon for the office said the consular official grossly interfered in the internal affairs of the HKSAR and its judicial independence and attempted to whitewash anti-China, destabilizing forces in Hong Kong suspected of violating the law.

The HKSAR is governed by the rule of law and no one shall be above the law. Human rights and freedoms are not pretexts for engaging in criminal acts, the spokesperson said.

The action taken by the Hong Kong Police Force towards the relevant persons and the trial conducted by the HKSAR court in accordance with law are legitimate and necessary efforts to safeguard national security and defend the rule of law and justice in the HKSAR, the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson said that it is purely an internal affair of the HKSAR, and external forces shall not interfere. Article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and Article 55 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations stipulate that diplomatic and consular personnel have "the duty to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State" and "the duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of the State".

"We strongly urge the relevant consular officials to earnestly respect China's sovereignty and security, observe international law and basic norms governing international relations, adhere to the laws of China including the HKSAR, and abide by their duties as consular personnel. They must stop colluding with anti-China, destabilizing forces in Hong Kong, refrain from going further down the wrong path, and stop playing with fire," the spokesperson said.
