HONG KONG - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Friday strongly objected to the adoption by the European Parliament of a so-called resolution relating to Hong Kong, saying the "resolution" is biased, politically motivated and does not reflect the truth.

In a statement, a spokesman for the HKSAR government said it is appalled by the call contained in the "resolution" that suspects arrested by law enforcement agencies in the HKSAR, some already convicted by independent courts, should be immediately released.

Hong Kong officials' determination in safeguarding national security will not be affected in any way by any so-called "sanctions".

“Nobody is above the law. Anybody who contravenes the law will have to face justice, regardless of who or where he/she is, as long as the offense falls within Hong Kong's jurisdiction,” the spokesman said.

Contrary to politically-motivated rhetoric that the National Security Law undermines the "one country, two systems" framework, the law fully and faithfully implements the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy, the spokesman said.

The HKSAR government will not tolerate any offence of subversion, the spokesman said. “Those who organized, planned, committed or participated in subversion would be pursued for their criminal act in accordance with the National Security Law.”

Officers of the HKSAR government are discharging an honorable duty to prevent, stop and punish in accordance with the law acts and activities endangering national security, the spokesman said.

“Hong Kong officials' determination in safeguarding national security will not be affected in any way by any so-called ‘sanctions’,” the spokesman said.

Samuel Yung Wing-ki, vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference's Committee for Economic Affairs, said that the EU Parliament’s resolution showed some Western politicians' lack of understanding of Hong Kong’s realities and the politicians' biases against China.

After the implementation of the National Security Law for Hong Kong, Hong Kong people are enjoying basic rights and freedoms while seeing a more stable social environment that safeguards normal economic activities, he said.

Song Sio-chong, professor at the Research Center of Hong Kong and Macao Basic Law at Shenzhen University, said that it was wrong for the EU Parliament to interfere in Hong Kong affairs.

Some European politicians have been irresponsible by making indiscreet remarks without understanding the essence of Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy, the Basic Law, and the National Security Law for Hong Kong, Song said.
