The central government’s top representative in Hong Kong on Friday commended a mainland construction company for its efficiency and high quality in building a quarantine center to accommodate close contacts of patients infected with the novel coronavirus.

Luo Huining, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, made the remarks during a visit to the new quarantine center at Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village.

Liaison chief Luo Weining said it has been the most critical time in combatting the epidemic, and urged the community to work together and “make contributions with pride”

The first 118 units at the center were completed on Friday and handed over to the SAR government hours later.

Luo said it has been the most critical time in combatting the epidemic, and urged the community to work together and “make contributions with pride”.

The facility was built by Hong Kong’s largest construction contractor — China State Construction International Holdings — a mainland-funded company based in the SAR.

Workers had spent 28 days constructing the 118 units four days ahead of schedule. When fully completed, the center will also provide 352 quarantine units for people who have had close contact with COVID-19 patients.

Luo said workers have been toiling around the clock to complete the project to meet the urgent needs of Hong Kong people. This shows the social responsibility and efficiency of mainland-funded enterprises in the city, he said.

He expressed hope that the workers will persevere in completing other facilities at the center so that more quarantine units can be used as soon as possible. But, workers should take extra precautions to avoid being infected, he said.
