Historic progress hailed in deepening of reforms

President Xi Jinping on Wednesday commended the country's "historic achievements" in deepening overall reforms and called for greater progress and bolder moves in reforms at the new development stage.

Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while presiding over the 17th meeting of the central committee for deepening overall reform. He is the director of the committee.

President Xi Jinping said all reform efforts have been focused on areas that touch on the immediate interests of the people. Their sense of fulfillment, happiness and security have been strengthened accordingly, he said

Since the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the CPC in November 2013, the CPC Central Committee, with unprecedented resolve and effort, has started the country's reform process with a view to firmly breaking institutional barriers and actively responding to the risks and challenges caused by changes in the external environment, Xi said.

He described the reforms that have taken place in China over the years as a profound revolution in theories, institutions and the nation's governance system with broad involvement of the people.

Institutional construction has played an important role in the fight against COVID-19, securing the victory in completing the building of a moderately prosperous society, poverty reduction and the country's economic work, Xi said, adding that the role of reforms in key areas is prominent.

While stressing that reforms have been advanced based on a people-centered approach, Xi said all reform efforts have been focused on areas that touch on the immediate interests of the people. Their sense of fulfillment, happiness and security have been strengthened accordingly, he said.

Noting that a lot of complicated problems and conflicts remain ahead, he called for innovative reforms to serve the overall situation of the Party's and the country's work by concentrating efforts on adhering to the new development philosophy, building the new development paradigm and advancing high-quality development.

Xi underlined the need to strengthen institutional innovation to improve the efficiency of reforms. He also stressed the importance of synergy between advancing reforms and preventing and defusing major risks as well as scientifically promoting reforms in the right manner and at the right time and pace.

The meeting participants reviewed an evaluation report on deepening overall reforms since the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the CPC as well as a series of other documents including a plan to establish a financial court in Beijing.
