Joshua Wong, 3 others plead guilty to joining illegal assembly

HONG KONG - Four Hong Kong activists, including separatist Joshua Wong Chi-fung, on Friday pleaded guilty at the District Court to taking part in an unauthorized assembly on June 4 last year.

Sentencing of the four activists is scheduled for May 6. Besides separatist Joshua Wong Chi-fung, the other three defendants are Lester Shum, Tiffany Yuen Ka-wai and Jannelle Rosalynne Leung

According to the Public Order Ordinance, any person who is guilty of the offence of unlawful assembly shall be liable to imprisonment for up to five years.

The four defendants are among 24 opposition figures who earlier were arrested and charged with taking part in or inciting others to participate in an unlawful assembly. Police banned the assembly in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nathan Law Kwun-chung, who fled Hong Kong to the United Kingdom, is among the 24 people. The hearing of the remaining 20 people is scheduled for June 11.
