Report: Vietnam PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc to run for president

HANOI - Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was relieved from duty on Friday morning here to run for president at the ongoing 11th session of the 14th National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam.

Phuc has been nominated to run for the post of the president to succeed Nguyen Phu Trong, the news agency cited a senior NA official as saying. This will be the first time ever the NA casts a ballot to elect an incumbent prime minister to the presidential post, according to Vietnam News Agency.

A resolution on relieving Phuc from the post was adopted by the NA, Vietnam's top legislature, with an approval rate of 92.92 percent, the news agency reported.

The resolution will come into force immediately after a new government leader is elected by the NA.

On Thursday afternoon, Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong delivered a proposal to the NA to relieve Phuc from the prime minister's duty.

In late January, Phuc was re-elected to be among the 200 members of the 13th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC).

Nguyen Xuan Phuc, born on July 20, 1954, joined the CPV in 1982. He held a bachelor's degree in economics, and was a member of the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th CPVCC, a member of the politburo of the 11th, 12th and 13th CPVCC, and deputy to the 11th, 13th and 14th NA.

According to Vietnamese legal regulations, the working tenure of the president and the prime minister is coincident with that of the NA.
