HKSAR civil servants take oath of allegiance

HONG KONG - Permanent secretaries, heads of department and senior directorate civil servants of the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) swore to uphold the Hong Kong Basic Law, bear allegiance to the HKSAR and be responsible to the government at a ceremony on Friday.

HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said to uphold the Basic Law not only means to abide by the Basic Law but also to support, promote and believe in the Basic Law

The oath-taking ceremony bears great significance as it allows these civil servants, who assume leadership positions in the government and play a pivotal role in the formulation and implementation of government policies, to solemnly make an open acknowledgment of their acceptance and commitment to uphold the Basic Law, bear allegiance to the HKSAR and be responsible to the HKSAR government, a government spokesman said.

Their oath-taking also demonstrates the solidarity and commitment of the senior echelon of the government to implement "one country, two systems" and serve for the betterment of the society, which will give a good example to the rest of the civil service and enhance public confidence in the civil service, the spokesman said.

Addressing the ceremony, HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said to uphold the Basic Law not only means to abide by the Basic Law but also to support, promote and believe in the Basic Law.

Civil servants swearing allegiance to the HKSAR should demonstrate loyalty, unity and responsibility, fully implement "one country, two systems," and safeguard national security, Lam said.
