Taliban delegation in Pakistan for talks on Afghan peace process

ISLAMABAD - Political representatives of the Afghan Taliban arrived in Pakistan Wednesday on a three-day visit for talks that are expected to focus on the Afghan peace process, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The visit of Taliban Political Commission delegation is part of Pakistan's policy to reach out to key Afghan parties in the Afghan peace process with a view to facilitating the Intra-Afghan Negotiations that commenced in Doha on Sept. 12, 2020.

The ministry said a delegation of the Taliban Political Commission (TPC) is expected to meet with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and call on Prime Minister Imran Khan. The TPC delegation last visited Pakistan in August this year.

"The visit of Taliban Political Commission delegation is part of Pakistan's policy to reach out to key Afghan parties in the Afghan peace process with a view to facilitating the Intra-Afghan Negotiations that commenced in Doha on Sept. 12, 2020," reads the statement .

Pakistan will continue to support an inclusive, broad-based and comprehensive political settlement for durable peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan and the region, according to the statement.

The Taliban political representatives' visit came shortly after US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad's visit to Pakistan on the Afghan reconciliation process. Pakistani Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa said in the meeting with the US special envoy that Pakistan will continue to play its positive role for peace and stability in the region.
