China firmly opposes the United States' arms sales to Taiwan and urges the US side to revoke its relevant plan to sell arms to the island, a foreign ministry spokesperson said Tuesday.

Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a press conference when answering a question on the United States' approval of a plan to sell Harpoon missile systems worth about US$2.4 billion to Taiwan.

Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the US arms sales to Taiwan severely violate the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques

Wang said the US arms sales to Taiwan severely violate the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique, and seriously interfere in China's internal affairs and undermine China's sovereignty and security interests.

The move has sent a wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces and seriously undermined China-US relations as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Wang added. "China firmly opposes this."

"China urges the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, stop arms sales to and military contact with Taiwan, and revoke relevant arms sales plan, so as to avoid further damages to China-US relations as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," Wang said.

"China will take legitimate and necessary measures to firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and security interests," Wang said.

Meanwhile, Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, also voiced firm opposition to US arms sales to Taiwan on Tuesday.

"We firmly oppose such acts," Zhu said.

She said the Democratic Progressive Party authority in Taiwan has been stubbornly counting on military force to seek "Taiwan independence". Zhu added that such attempts will only undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and bring disaster to people in the region.
