HK sees 11 new virus cases, 4 testing centers now operational

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 11 coronavirus cases on Monday, as all of the four community testing centers became operational.

In a press briefing on Monday afternoon, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch of the Centre for Health Protection, said five of the 11 new cases were local infections, including one that was of unknown origin.

Chuan said two more residents of Home of Treasure, a private care home in Kwai Chung for disabled people, were confirmed to have contracted the virus, bringing the total number of infections related to the home to 17.

She said an 18-year-old student at Youth College in Tuen Mun was also found infected. The young woman, whose case was linked to a previous patient, developed symptoms on Oct 4 before she visited the campus the next day, said Chuang.

The college has been advised to suspend for two weeks. Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education in Tuen Mun, which is close to and shares some facilities with Youth College, also needs to be closed for 14 days.

Chuang said health authorities found it difficult to identify the infection source of a Pakistani woman at So Uk Estate in Cheung Sha Wan. The woman returned to Hong Kong on July 11 and gave birth to a baby on Aug 27 at Kwong Wah Hospital.

Chuang said she could be an imported case, but the possibility of local transmission has not been ruled out at this stage.

Six of Monday’s fresh cases were imported, one from Germany, one France, one Switzerland, one India, and two from the United Kingdom, Chuang added.

At 8 am on Monday, all of four temporary community testing centers, set up inside the community facilities of Wan Chai, Kwai Tsing, Kowloon City and Yau Tsim Mong districts respectively, started operations.

According to a late-night government statement on Sunday, the Wan Chai and Kwai Tsing centers, which started services on Sunday, had collected specimens from 619 and 707 people, respectively, for the day.
