COVID-19: HK sees 13 new infections, toll touches 100

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 13 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, as the coronavirus claimed one more life in the financial hub, bringing the total number of related deaths to 100.

Nine of the 13 new cases were locally transmitted while the remaining four were imported cases, health officials said at a news briefing on Saturday.

Five of the local cases were identified under the mass testing program, which was launched on Sept 1

The new additions brought the city’s infection tally to 4,938.

As of 8 pm Saturday, more than 1.66 million samples have been collected under the free and voluntary testing program.

The latest death involved a 67-year-old man with chronic illness, who was admitted to the Caritas Medical Centre on Aug 11 due to fever and pneumonia. He was later tested positive for COVID-19.

His condition deteriorated later due to terminal cancer and he eventually succumbed at 6.25 am Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the center.

Hong Kong reported its first COVID-19 death on Feb 14 and had seen no more than 10 deaths before July. More than 80 deaths have been recorded within two months since the start of the third wave of the epidemic in early July, with nearly 60 in August alone.
