Mekong countries laud China's plans to boost cooperation

BEIJING - Leaders of the Mekong countries on Monday lauded China's proposals to further promote the Lancang-Mekong cooperation.

China announced a series of proposals to promote Lancang-Mekong cooperation on Monday as Chinese Premier Li Keqiang attended the third Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (MLC) leaders' meeting in Beijing via video link.

Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith said Laos appreciates China's offer to share the annual hydrological information of the Lancang River with the Mekong countries.

Thanking China for its support in the construction of the China-Laos Railway, the prime minister said he looks forward to China's continued support for the railway's construction and extending it to Thailand, so as to promote connectivity between China, Laos, Thailand and the whole region.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodian prime minister, said with the spread of COVID-19, China's proposal for cooperation on food security is of great significance.

As major grain producers, the five Mekong countries urgently need to strengthen cooperation with China in food security and food trade, Hun Sen said.

The Cambodian side appreciates China's efforts in vaccine development and its commitment to give priority to providing vaccines to the Mekong countries once a vaccine is developed and put into use, he added.

Myanmar President U Win Myint said Myanmar would like to express its most sincere gratitude to China for its intention to expand the import of agricultural products from the Mekong countries.

He also thanked China for offering to share the annual hydrological information of the Lancang River with the Mekong countries, which will help regional countries jointly prevent and respond to natural disasters.

The leaders also expressed condolences to the Chinese government and people over the losses in the recent floods in parts of China

Welcoming China's offer to share the Lancang River's hydrological data for the whole year with the Mekong countries, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Thailand supports the establishment of an information exchange mechanism on water resources management among Lancang-Mekong countries.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc lauded China's move to link the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation with the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, which will further unblock trade channels, maintain the stability of the industrial and supply chain, and promote regional coordinated development.

The Vietnamese leader said Vietnam supports China's proposal to share the Lancang River's annual hydrological information with the Mekong countries.

The leaders also expressed condolences to the Chinese government and people over the losses in the recent floods in parts of China.
