Visitor arrivals to Macao increase in July as virus curbs ease

MACAO - The number of visitor arrivals to Macao in July 2020 surged by 228.1 percent month-to-month to 74,006 due to the gradual easing of the quarantine measures, the special administrative region (SAR)'s statistic service said here on Friday.

Same-day visitors and overnight visitors totaled 50,210 and 23,796 respectively

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that despite the increase month-to-month, the July's visitor arrivals still recorded a year-on-year decline of more than 90 percent.

Same-day visitors and overnight visitors totaled 50,210 and 23,796 respectively. The visitors' average length of stay went up by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.3 days. The average duration for overnight visitors extended by 2.5 days to 4.7 days, whereas that for same-day visitors shortened by 0.1 day to 0.1 day.

In terms of source markets, the number of mainland visitors tumbled by 97.4 percent year-on-year to 66,489. Meanwhile, there were 6,240 visitors from the Hong Kong SAR and 1,271 from the Taiwan region.

In the first seven months of 2020, the number of visitor arrivals reduced by 86.0 percent year-on-year to 3,342,906.

Same-day visitors and overnight visitors declined by 85.9 percent and 86.0 percent respectively to 1,773,428 and 1,569,478.

The visitors' average length of stay in the first seven months went up by 0.3 day year-on-year to 1.4 days, with that of overnight visitors rising by 0.6 day to 2.8 days, while that of same-day visitors staying unchanged at 0.2 day.
