India sees biggest daily jump in virus cases, tally tops 300,000

BEIRUT / SEOUL / DUBAI / NEW DELHI - India reported its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus cases on Saturday, adding 11,458 confirmed infections and taking the its total count to more than 300,000, according to data from the federal health ministry.

India is the fourth-worst affected country in the world, having surpassed the United Kingdom on Friday, with cases steadily increasingly despite a nationwide lockdown that began in late March and has since been loosened.

Confirmed cases in the worst-hit western state of Maharashtra moved past the 100,000 mark, data showed on Saturday. The national capital New Delhi, where the health system has also been reeling, saw more than 2,000 new cases.

Despite the rising case load, the recovery rate of patients was improving, with more than 147,000 people having been cured, the federal government said on Friday.

Australia

Australia’s largest state of New South Wales on Saturday reported its first locally transmitted COVID-19 case since late May, a sign the threat from the pandemic is far from over as social distancing restrictions continue to be eased.

The state recorded four new coronavirus cases overnight, taking the total number in Australia to nearly 7,300.

The local case was a man in his 20s, and according to health authorities he did not attend any of the recent Black Lives Matter protests in Sydney.

“The virus is likely still circulating in the community. People with mild symptoms or no obvious symptoms can unknowingly pass the infection on to other people,” NSW Health said.

Indonesia

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,014 within one day to 37,420, with the death toll adding by 43 to 2,091, Achmad Yurianto, a Health Ministry official, said at a press conference here on Saturday.

He said that 563 more people had been discharged from hospitals, making the total number of recovered patients stand at 13,776.

The pandemic has spread to all the 34 provinces in the country.

Iran

Iran on Friday reported 2,369 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the tally to 182,545. 

Iran, which has re-emerged as the hardest-hit country by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Middle East region, also reported 75 more deaths from the virus, raising the death toll to 8,659.

So far, 144,649 patients have recovered from the infectious respiratory disease in Iran.

Iran's senior health official urged the people to wear facemasks in public place, observe social distancing and avoid unnecessary gatherings. She also urged the elderlies to stay homes.

Iraq

The Iraqi Health Ministry on Friday recorded 1,095 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections to 17,770 in the country.

According to a statement of the ministry, 39 more people died from the coronavirus during the day, bringing the death toll to 496, while 6,868 patients have recovered.

Israel

In Israel, the number of new daily coronavirus cases continue to surpass 200 for the second day in a row.

Israeli Ministry of Health said 226 new patients were added, bringing the total number of cases to 18,795, while the number of death cases remained 300.

Earlier on Friday, Israel's Prime Minister Office and the Health Ministry announced that starting June 14, weddings and events to mark baby birth may be held in events halls.

According to the decision, the number of participants in such events shall not exceed one person per two square meters, up to a maximum of 250 people, not including hall employees.

Kuwait

Kuwait reported 520 new cases of COVID-19 and six more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 34,952 and the death toll to 285, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Kyrgyzstan 

Kyrgyzstan reported 41 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, raising the total number of infections to 2,207 in the central Asian country.

Over the past 24 hours, 3,158 laboratory tests were carried out, which detected 41 new cases, Nurbolot Usenbaev, the country's deputy health minister, told a news briefing.

Usenbaev said that among the newly infected, four were medical workers, bringing the total number of contracted medical workers to 429, including 339 recoveries.

The official also reported one new virus-related death, pushing the country's death toll to 27.

Lebanon 

Lebanon will re-open Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport for commercial flights beginning July 1, but will keep air traffic at 10% of capacity from a year ago, a statement from the prime minister’s office said on Friday.

Myanmar

Myanmar government announced late Friday further extension of effective period for preventive measures against COVID-19 until the end of June.

The national-level Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment on COVID-19 issued the announcement of extension measures as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease.

As of Saturday morning, Myanmar has reported 261 COVID-19 positive cases with six deaths, according to latest figures released by the Health and Sports Ministry.

Nepal

Police in Nepal arrested 10 people, including seven foreigners, on Saturday as demonstrations against the government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis continued with hundreds of protesters gathering in the capital city Kathmandu, officials said.

The Himalayan nation imposed a complete lockdown in March after reporting its second confirmed coronavirus case. But the number of infections have since increased to 5,062, with 16 deaths, and the government has come under fire for not doing enough to contain the outbreak.

Oman

The Omani Ministry of Health announced on Friday 1,117 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number in the country to 21,071.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, all new cases, including 470 Omanis, are related to community contact.

Palestine

A senior Palestinian official said on Friday that two new COVID-19 cases were recorded in the West Bank, raising the total number to 669.

Palestinian Minister of Health Mai al-Kaila said in an emailed press statement that the new cases are two children, three and five years old respectively, adding that they were infected due to contact with their mother from Hebron.

Qatar

Qatar's Health Ministry announced 1,517 new infections of COVID-19, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 76,588.

Some 1,965 people recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 53,296, while one died, raising the fatalities up to 70, the ministry said.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia registered on Friday 3,921 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 119,942.

The death toll rose to 893, with the reporting of 36 new fatalities, the health ministry tweeted.

South Korea

South Korea reported 49 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of 0:00 a.m. Saturday local time, raising the total number of infections to 12,051.

The daily caseload moved between 30 and 60 for the past 13 days. Of the new cases, five were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,330.

South Korea launched a massive, technology-reliant testing and tracing campaign, a by-product of lessons learned from its bitter experience with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in 2015.

Thailand

Thailand reported five more coronavirus cases Saturday, taking the total in the country to 3,134. So far, 58 people have died in the country, none overnight, the government said in a statement. All the five people who reported positive came back from Saudi Arabia and have been quarantined, the government said.

The Philippines

The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 25,392 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 607 more infections on Saturday.

The death toll increased to 1,074 after 22 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH added.

Turkey

In Turkey, the total number of COVID-19 cases climbed to 175,218 after 1,195 new infections were reported, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Friday.

In a single day, 15 people died, taking the death toll to 4,778, the minister said.

He said that Turkey saw an increase in COVID-19 patients in intensive care units, warning against "false optimism" for the outbreak.

UAE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday announced 513 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 41,499.

UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said in a statement the new cases include many nationalities. All are in a stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

Yemen

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Yemen's government-controlled provinces rose to 632 on Friday, as 41 new cases were confirmed.

The Yemeni Health Ministry said in a brief statement that during the past 24 hours, the number of recoveries in the government-controlled areas increased to 28 since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus on April 10.
