HK sees no new infection for sixth time in a week

HONG KONG – Signs that Hong Kong is beating back the COVID-19 keep growing, as the city reported no new cases of the disease on Saturday for a sixth day out of the past seven.

Saturday’s good news brought further encouragement, as the city marked 13 straight days without a case of local community transmission. All new cases since have landed here from overseas.

Hong Kong has recorded 1,039 novel coronavirus infections over the 100-day span since the first confirmed case in the city, on Jan 23. Among them, 192 patients remain under isolation, Hospital Authority said on Saturday.

The Center for Health Protection continues to call on residents to maintain social distancing and avoid non-essential travel as the outbreak in some foreign countries remain severe.

It’s especially good news that on the Labour Day long weekend from Thursday to Sunday, with people out and about, visiting the malls, strolling country parks, and taking it easy, there were no new cases of community transmission.
