Veteran Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor dies of cancer

MUMBAI - Veteran Bollywood actor, director and producer Rishi Kapoor, passed away in India's Mumbai on Thursday morning.

Renowned actor Amitabh Bachchan tweeted that the passing of the 67-year old actor.

Kapoor returned to India in September after undergoing treatment for cancer in the United States for almost a year, and was admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday morning.

The death of Kapoor is a set-back for the Indian film and entertainment industry, after another actor, Irrfan Khan, passed away on Wednesday also due to cancer.

Rishi Kapoor had received the National Film Award for his debut role as a child artist in his father Raj Kapoor's 1970 film Mera Naam Joker, and played his first lead role as an adult artist in 1973 in the Hindi film Bobby, for which he received the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1974.

"The sudden demise of actor Rishi Kapoor is shocking. He was not only a great actor but a good human being. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans. Om Shanti," Prakash Javadekar, India's federal minister for information and broadcasting, said in his tweet.
