HK enters 5G era with 2 telecom firms rolling out services

HONG KONG - Mobile users in Hong Kong were officially ushered into the 5G era, as two major telecommunication companies rolled out their 5G mobile services on Wednesday. 

China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) and CSL Mobile have begun offering 5G service for mobile users at a price as low as HK$198 per month. 

At a press conference on Tuesday, China Mobile said its 5G signal in Hong Kong can cover 55 percent of the land area with 87 percent coverage in the urban area, reaching up to 70 percent of HK’s population.

The coverage is expected to reach 90 percent by the end of the year.

What’s more, CMHK’s 5G package will include roaming data covering not only the Chinese mainland, but also South Korea. By the end of 2020, the company will extend its 5G service to 10 other countries in Asia and Europe.

Prices of the service range from HK$198 per month for 30 Gigabyte (GB) of local data plus 3GB of roaming data in the mainland and Macao, to HK$498 per month for 300GB plus 20GB of roaming data. The network speed can go up to 1GB per second.

The packages offered by CSL range from HK$198 a month for 8GB of local data, to HK$698 a month for 300GB. 

The company also introduced discount packages if users buy mobile phones from it. 

CSL is offering special incentives to early customers, including one-month fee exemption and free European football matches on Now TV when users sign in with their 5G services. An extra 30GB of data will be included for free if users sign up by April 7.
