HONG KONG - The HKSAR government confirmed Thursday that a pet dog in Hong Kong had tested positive for COVID-19 caused by a novel coronavirus.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department confirmed the pet dog's infection in a press release on Thursday.

The infected German Shepherd's owner lives in Pok Fu Lam and it had been quarantined after its owner was confirmed to have been infected with COVID-19. It shared quarantine at the government's animal keeping facility at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge's Hong Kong Port on Wednesday along with another mixed breed dog from the same residence, according to the press release.

No positive results were obtained from the mixed breed dog and neither dog has shown any outward sign of the disease.

This new infection followed an earlier case in which a 17-year-old Pomeranian dog had tested weak positive during repeated analyses for the virus. The dog died two days after it was released from quarantine.
