Jersey auctions of Europe soccer giants support anti-virus fight

NANJING - Chinese sports streaming service platform PP Sports has teamed up with five top European soccer clubs, pitching in with jersey auctions, to help fight the novel coronavirus.

A total of 800,000 yuan (about US$114,000) has been raised through online auctions of 34 jerseys from clubs of Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, according to Suning, parent company of PP Sports.

More than one million netizens have watched the auctions, said Suning, adding that all the revenue will be donated to charities in the name of the clubs, as a way to support the fight against the coronavirus.

Autographed jerseys of the entire Spurs' starting eleven in the Champions League were auctioned Saturday, with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris' selling for the highest price of 27,701 yuan, the company said.

"Sports not only brings us pleasure, but also gives us spiritual power," said Wang Dong, executive vice president of Suning Sports, calling on more people to participate in the anti-virus fight.
