BEIJING — Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been urged not to "play with fire," as it took a stance to increase confrontations across the Taiwan Straits, a mainland spokesperson said Monday.

He made the remarks in response to questions whether the navigation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces on Sunday was intended as a warning to the visit of a DPP official to the United States.

The PLA's move was aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, as well as the common interests of compatriots on the two sides, Ma said.
