BERLIN - Hertha Berlin and Schalke shared the spoils as both sides failed to break the deadlock within 90 minutes at the opener of the 20th round in Bundesliga on Friday.

The spectators at Berlin's Olympiastadium saw an unspectacular first half with only three chances. Schalke's Suat Serdar approached the goal dangerously in the 18th minute but the midfielder pulled over the bar from the edge of the box.

The hosts had to wait for their first note worthy chance until the 24th minute before Marius Wolf missed the target with a promising drop kick from inside the box.

Schalke created their second opportunity of the match in the dying seconds of the first half but Weston McKennie drilled the ball over the bar.

It remained the only three chances for the remainder of the first half as both teams lacked in accuracy as well as ideas to pose any kind threat.

In the second half, the hosts grabbed a better start into the second half after Per Ciljan Skjelbred headed over the bar in the 47th minute.

The "Royal Blues" gained a foothold into the second half as Dedryck Boyata's misplaced return pass was intercepted by Benito Raman, who squandered a golden chance with only goalkeeper Rune Jarstein to beat from very close range at the hour mark.

It remained an unexciting encounter as many misplaced passes from both sides disrupted the rhythm of the game.

Hertha Berlin's new arrival Krzysztof Piatek had a header and a close range effort on target whereas Schalke's Michael Gregoritsch nodded just wide of the near post in the closing period.

The hosts created the last chance of the game through Maximilian Mittelstadt, who almost netted into the far post corner with his low shot.

With the share of the spoils, Hertha Berlin stay on the 13th place of the standings, and Schalke remain in 6th position.

The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: Borussia Dortmund host newly promoted Union Berlin, Hoffenheim see Bayer Leverkusen, last placed Fortuna Dusseldorf face Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz encounter runner-up Bayern Munich, Augsburg clash with relegation-threatened Werder Bremen and front-runners Leipzig meet Borussia Monchengladbach.
