A spokesperson for the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region expressed support on Thursday for the court’s sentencing of jailed separatist Joshua Wong Chi-fung, stating that the ruling firmly upholds the dignity and effectiveness of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region National Security Law.

The spokesperson said that Wong’s conspiracy to collude with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security was plainly evident.

Wong had long conspired to collude with foreign or external forces to endanger national security and showed no remorse, continuing his actions even after the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region National Security Law was promulgated and implemented, the spokesperson noted, emphasizing that Wong’s acts seriously harmed national sovereignty, security, and development interests, directly endangering the vital interests of Hong Kong residents.

The spokesperson pointed out that the Hong Kong Judiciary upheld professionalism and performed their duties strictly in accordance with the law throughout the handling of the case, demonstrating the principles and spirit of the rule of law.
