Total 1,850 flat owners, or 93.2 percent, of the Wang Fuk Court, which was burnt in a devastating fire last year, have signed agreements to sell their flats within a deadline set by Hong Kong’s housing authorities.

The remaining 6.8 percent of owners were unable to sign the Agreement for Sale and Purchase (ASP) within the deadline – which expired on Thursday – due to special circumstances, the Housing Bureau said on Friday.

A deadly fire tore through seven of the eight buildings of the housing complex in Tai Po on Nov 26 last year, killing 168 people and injuring many others.

A Housing Bureau spokesman said some owners were unable to sign the agreements in time due to special circumstances, such as requiring a longer time to clarify or handle the title of their flats, including probate, bankruptcy, title disputes, cases involving mentally incapacitated persons, or currently staying outside Hong Kong.

For such owners, the special administrative region government may consider making appropriate arrangements on a case-by-case basis, the spokesman added.
