HONG KONG — With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, Huatai International Financial Holdings Ltd has announced that it will host the sixth annual “Huatai Light Rail Ding Ding Fun Mid-Autumn Free Ride Day” on Sept 25.
For the first time, the event will feature vehicles designed by local youth, selected from a territory-wide competition.
Once again, the company will invite Hong Kong residents and visitors to enjoy unlimited free rides on the Light Rail and all passenger tram services throughout the day, connecting families across Hong Kong Island and the New Territories for festive celebrations.
The event is supported by MTR Corp and Hong Kong Tramways Ltd.
This year’s highlight is the inaugural Youth Vehicle Body Design Competition, which attracted 461 secondary school students from at least 150 schools, including 441 current and past participants of the government’s “Strive and Rise Programme.”
Champions Lee Yin-long (Form 3, TWGHs Sun Hoi Directors’ College) and Cai Jia-jun (Form 6, Cumberland Presbyterian Church Yao Dao Secondary School) have seen their winning designs applied to a Light Rail vehicle and a tram, respectively.
The themed vehicles debuted at launch ceremonies held at the Siu Hong Light Railway stop and the Whitty Street Tram Depot, attended by Huatai Financial Holdings COO Juliana Wang, MTR Light Rail & Bus GM Alan Kwan, and Hong Kong Tramways Deputy Head of Commercial and Brand Crystal Wong.
TramOramic Tour
In addition, Huatai will introduce Hong Kong’s first night-time moon-viewing “TramOramic Tour” on the Mid-Autumn Festival and the following day. The specially designed 1920s-style open-top tram features classic decor, lanterns, onboard audio guides in 16 languages, and a postcard corner with complimentary mailing.
Ticket holders will receive a “Golden Ticket” for two days of unlimited regular tram rides. Registration is open on the event website, with limited slots allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The free ride initiative began in 2021 and expanded to the Light Rail in 2025, extending coverage to the northwestern New Territories.
