HONG KONG — The China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) has created a lasting tribute to Tung Chee-hwa, the organization’s founder and chairman emeritus, following his passing on Sept 8 at the age of 89.

Tung, the first chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was remembered by CUSEF as a lifelong advocate for dialogue and understanding between China, the United States and the wider international community.

The tribute aims to honor his public service and enduring commitment to global peace, progress, and prosperity.

“I saw firsthand Mr. Tung’s exceptional sense of duty, generosity and conviction,” James Chau, president of CUSEF, said in a press release. “This permanent tribute not only placemarks his remarkable record of public service, but honors his lifelong belief that dialogue can advance global peace, progress and prosperity.”

The tribute is intended to inspire a new generation to advance the cause to which Tung was deeply devoted, Chau added.

The tribute compiles more than 100 reflections from friends, colleagues, and leaders worldwide who knew and worked with Tung. Contributors include former vice premier Zeng Peiyan, US ambassador Max Baucus and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

The tribute page also includes a dedicated space for the public to share memories and reflections. It features an archival 2019 interview with CUSEF President Chau discussing China and the US, a statement from the CUSEF Board of Governors following Tung’s passing and a speech delivered by CUSEF Vice Chairman Andy Tung at the China Institute of America Centennial Gala honoring Tung in June 2026.

Established by Tung in 2008, CUSEF is a Hong Kong-based nonprofit organization dedicated to serving as a platform for exchange among the peoples of China, the US and the world. Its mission emphasizes open dialogue, mutual learning and shared responsibility to build trust and understanding for enduring peace.
