The Hong Kong Observatory said on Monday that the chance of issuing a typhoon warning signal due to Tropical Cyclone Narra was low as the storm maintained some distance from the territory.

The observatory said in a weather bulletin on Monday afternoon that Narra was expected to skirt the vicinity of the western coast of Leizhou Peninsula in the next couple of days. Unless Narra further edges closer to the Pearl River Estuary, the chance of issuing a tropical cyclone warning signal is relatively low. 

As of 2 pm Monday, Narra was centered about 320 kilometers west of Haikou and was forecast to be slow-moving, lingering over the vicinity of Beibu Wan, the HKO said.

It added that, under the influence of an active southerly airstream, there will be showers and squally thunderstorms over Hong Kong midweek, and winds will be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground.

Meanwhile, the observatory said Tropical Cyclone Gaenari will move northwest slowly into inland Fujian on Monday and dissipate gradually. With its relatively weak intensity and small circulation, the tropical depression's direct threat to Hong Kong is not high, the HKO said.
