The hot weather in Hong Kong is expected to continue until Thursday, with temperatures in some areas forecast to reach 37 degrees Celsius or higher at the start of the week, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The observatory said Tropical Cyclone Dolphin’s outer subsiding air will continue to bring extremely hot weather to the territory as it moves across eastern China.

“High temperature weather is expected to continue on Wednesday and Thursday,” the HKO said.

As of 1 pm Monday, the maximum temperature in Sheung Shui in the New Territories had reached 38.4 C, 37.9 C in Wong Tai Sin, 37.1 C in Yuen Long Park, and 37 C in Happy Valley, according to the HKO.

Hong Kong recorded its hottest day on Sunday after temperatures reached 36.9 C, the highest since official meteorological records began in 1884. A 64-year-old man hiking in Tai Po collapsed apparently from heatstroke and died while he was being taken to a hospital.  

With a very hot weather warning issued on Wednesday still in force, the Centre for Health Protection urged members of the public to avoid strenuous exercise and prolonged activities such as hiking or trekking. 

Those who have outdoor activities should schedule them in the morning or in the late afternoon, if possible, and bring enough water, the CHP said.
