Hong Kong’s weather forecaster issued typhoon signal No 3 at 1:20 pm on Saturday as Tropical Cyclone Noul intensified slightly while moving steadily across the northeastern part of the South China Sea.
The alert means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometers per hour are expected.
“Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports,” the Hong Kong Observatory said while issuing the alert.
Earlier at 8:40 pm on Friday, the HKO issued the standby signal No 1 with Noul moving closer to the city.
In a notification on Saturday morning, the Education Board announced suspension of afternoon classes of kindergartens, schools for children with physical disability and schools for children with intellectual disability for the day.
“With its strong winds and outer rainbands gradually affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong, local winds will strengthen progressively,” the observatory said in a 1:23 pm bulletin.

Warning that there will be more squally showers and seas will be rough with swells, it said the public should complete all precautionary measures as soon as possible, stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports.
“According to the present forecast track, Noul will make landfall over the vicinity of Huizhou to Shanwei tomorrow (Sunday) morning, skirting around 100 kilometers northeast of Hong Kong,” reads the HKO bulletin.
Depending on the distance between the landfall location of the cyclone and Hong Kong, the size of its gale winds, and local wind conditions, the observatory will assess the need for issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals between 9 pm tonight and midnight.
The HKO also warned that under the influence of the rainbands of Noul, there will be frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms on Sunday.
