BEIJING – The National Meteorological Center renewed an orange typhoon alert at 6 pm Friday as Typhoon Noul, the 12th typhoon of the year, is expected to make landfall along the coast of South China's Guangdong province between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Typhoon Noul was upgraded from tropical storm to severe tropical storm on Friday afternoon. After making landfall between Zhuhai and Raoping in Guangdong, the typhoon will turn northward and gradually weaken, the center said.

From 8 pm Friday to 8 pm Saturday, parts of eastern Guangdong and Taiwan are expected to experience heavy to torrential rain due to the typhoon, with some areas in southeastern Taiwan possibly seeing downpours.

Strong winds are expected in parts of the South China Sea, the Bashi Channel, the waters east of Taiwan, the Taiwan Strait, the southern East China Sea, as well as the coastal areas of Taiwan, Fujian and Guangdong.

China has a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system for typhoons, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

In response to Typhoon Noul, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Friday activated a Level-IV emergency response for flooding and typhoon control in Guangdong and Fujian, and dispatched a work team to Guangdong for guidance.

On the same day, the Ministry of Emergency Management launched a Level-IV emergency response for geological disasters in the two provinces.

To safeguard agricultural production against potential risks, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has recently taken a series of measures, which include guiding affected areas to speed up the harvesting of crops and aquaculture products and to reinforce planting and breeding facilities.
