Chinese shares close lower Friday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.61 percent to 3,814.20 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.47 percent lower at 13,774.68 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at 1.94 trillion yuan ($285.6 billion), down from 2.21 trillion yuan in the previous trading day.

Stocks related to electronic specialty gases and high-bandwidth memory led the gains, while those related to precious metals, electricity, and coal were among the top decliners.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.65 percent to close at 3,480.87 points.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 1.05 percent lower at 1,941.07 points.
