MOSCOW – Russia considers US statements suggesting that an escalation of Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure would help bring about a peaceful settlement as reflecting a "mistaken judgment", the Kremlin said on Thursday.

"The escalation of tensions and actions along the lines of escalation will in no way contribute to the peace process," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said at a briefing, adding that further escalation could prolong the conflict.

Peskov's remarks came after US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the intensifying fighting between Russia and Ukraine during their visit to Ankara on Wednesday.

Moscow sees a degree of duality in Washington's position, Peskov said. He noted that while the United States continues to supply weapons and military technologies to Kyiv, it has also maintained its desire to help advance the peace process.

Russia believes the desire to be sincere and welcomes it, he said, adding that Moscow hopes Washington will resume its efforts on the Ukraine issue after addressing the situation surrounding Iran.

In a separate interview with Russian news site Vesti, Peskov said NATO's designation of Russia as a threat is confrontational in nature and requires Russia to continue strengthening its technological and economic capabilities while safeguarding its national interests.
