BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.44 percent to 4,112.45 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.53 percent lower at 16,119.17 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices reached 3.66 trillion yuan ($537.71 billion), up from 3.27 trillion yuan in the previous trading day.
Agricultural, financial and biopharmaceutical stocks saw notable gains, while glass, electrical appliances and power generation equipment sectors posted major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.89 percent to close at 4,260.72 points.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 1.34 percent lower at 2,486.64 points.
