An experienced bus driver in Northwest China has been hailed as a hero after sacrificing his life to save 45 passengers by bringing his vehicle to a stop in the final seconds after suffering a sudden medical emergency.

The incident occurred at around 7:04 am on April 6 along a section of an expressway in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, according to local authorities and dashcam footage that has since circulated widely online.

The driver, 56-year-old Zhou Qihong from Tongxin county in Wuzhong, had more than 30 years of experience and was transporting passengers to plant melon seedlings when he was suddenly stricken by illness.

Video footage shows Zhou struggling to maintain control as his condition rapidly worsens. As the bus veers off course and strikes a roadside barrier, panic spreads among passengers. In a critical five-second window, Zhou manages to straighten the vehicle and apply the brakes, bringing it to a stop beside a roadside ditch more than two meters deep. All 45 passengers were unharmed.

Zhou collapsed in his seat moments later, his foot still on the brake.

Authorities said his actions prevented a serious accident, drawing widespread tribute to his final act of duty.
