Phoenix TV celebrated its 30th anniversary in Hong Kong on Tuesday with the launch of new partnerships in artificial intelligence, reaffirming the network’s commitment to technological innovation and global communication.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, officiating at the ceremony, lauded Phoenix TV’s three-decade journey as a “story of resilience, transformation and global reach”.

Founded in 1996 as a joint venture in Tai Po, the broadcaster has grown from an alternative Chinese-language channel into a global media powerhouse, with coverage in 190 countries and a viewership of about 500 million.

“Phoenix’s story mirrors Hong Kong’s own,” Lee said, adding that the media group embodies the city’s “can-do spirit” in its rise from local beginnings to international prominence.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the broadcaster signed strategic cooperation agreements with Volcano Engine and DataOceanAI to strengthen its use of large language models, cloud technology and Chinese-language datasets.

The collaboration aims to harness AI for smarter news coverage and richer cultural storytelling.

On the same day, Phoenix TV also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on the Hong Kong Professional Services GoGlobal Platform.

Phoenix TV Chairman and CEO Xu Wei said the partnership seeks to promote the city’s strengths in legal, financial and accounting services, supporting mainland enterprises in their overseas expansion and consolidating Hong Kong’s role as an international professional-services hub.
