Hong Kong’s legislature is in full accord with the executive-led system as it is “the most suitable, effective” way to govern the city, its president said in a social media post on Tuesday, calling on the legislature to continue safeguarding national and local interests, ensuring the steady progress of the “one country, two systems” principle, and delivering effective governance for the city.

In the post, Legislative Council President Starry Lee Wai-king also pledged to rally the city’s lawmakers behind a new response mechanism to rebut and clarify repeated inaccuracies and derogatory narratives directed at the city by some external forces.

The alignment echoed a statement from Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, who during a seminar in Beijing last month told legislators of the two special administrative regions to bolster governance efficiency by steadfastly upholding the executive-led model.

Lee said that legislators held a study session on Monday afternoon to discuss points raised in Xia’s speech, and that the session saw contributions from new and reelected members on how LegCo can better perform its constitutional role and strike the right balance in supporting the government without lapsing and overseeing it without overreaching.

She added that she expects all legislators to deepen their patriotic commitment, concentrating on their legislative tasks with robust research and clear policy communication with the public and industries, and serve as an effective bridge between the government and the community.

Lee also called on every LegCo member to speed up how their district or sector-based offices are set up to better serve residents.
