HONG KONG - The Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Saturday strongly condemned and firmly opposed the ill-intentioned legislation targeting Hong Kong, which certain US politicians are again seeking to advance.
These politicians have attempted to strip Hong Kong's Economic and Trade Offices (ETOs) in the United States of their privileges and immunities, and even called for shuttering these offices.

Highlighting the positive role of Hong Kong's ETOs in facilitating trade and economic exchanges between the city and the United States, a spokesperson for the commissioner's office said that such legislation would disrupt regular commercial communication and cooperation, harming the interests of American businesses, workers, and consumers -- an irrational move that hurts others without benefiting itself.
Since Hong Kong's return to the motherland, the "one country, two systems" framework has been continuously refined, and the national security laws in Hong Kong have fully respected and protected human rights, providing a solid foundation for its long-term prosperity and stability, the spokesperson said.

The attempts by some US politicians laid bare their deep-seated ideological bias and Cold War mentality, the spokesperson said, urging them to immediately stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs.
"Any attempt to smear the city's freedoms and human rights or tarnish the success of 'one country, two systems' is nothing but wishful thinking and is doomed to fail," the spokesperson said.
