HANOI - At least 10 people were killed and two others went missing following flooding and landslides in Vietnam's Khanh Hoa province, local media reported Wednesday.

Six fatalities occurred in a landslide at Khanh Le Pass, while another death was recorded in a landslide at Khanh Son Pass.

Three others died after being swept away by floodwaters or slipping while crossing a flooded bridge.

Nearly 9,000 houses in 14 communes and wards of Khanh Hoa province have been inundated, while widespread landslides in mountainous areas have disrupted traffic and threatened people's safety.

More than 6,500 residents had been evacuated from flooded areas as of Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Railways Corporation has halted 10 North-South passenger trains as heavy rains and flooding continued to disrupt operations across central Vietnam, especially Khanh Hoa province, the Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.

The newly suspended services on Wednesday included two trains between the capital city of Hanoi and the southern hub Ho Chi Minh City, and two others operating between Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

The rail operator already suspended six passenger trains on Monday and Tuesday due to severe weather conditions.

Heavy rains in Khanh Hoa province since Sunday have triggered landslides along several rail segments, washing away parts of the track bed.
